About the Artist:
Michelangelo Merisi, later known as Caravaggio, was born in 1571 and died in 1610. He was born in Caravaggio, a small village located near Milan, and later took on that name. The quality of his work led to many public commissions. He was said to have a violent temper, and was constantly in trouble with the law. Most of Caravaggio's religious paintings emphasized sadness, suffering, and death.
