Thoughts on Room Design:

When the word "foyer" is used, I tend to automatically think of a grand entrance of sorts. In looking this word up in the encyclopedia, I learned that the term foyer "was originally applied only to the area in french theatres where actors relaxed when they were offstage, also known as the 'green room'. As these actors became accustomed to visits by friends during and after performances, such areas came to be large and handsomely decorated". The moldings, columns and parquet flooring come together beautifully, the term parquet meaning "entire floor space for spectators". The inviting design of this foyer epitomizes all of the above and is perfectly suited for entertaining any time of the year.

Crown Molding:

Stacked moldings give a room added drama and depth, which may not work in all cases but is perfectly appropriate for this foyer. A combination of moldings similar to the AB108 and AD318 were used on the wall and ceiling to create this look. Once painted the same color, this 3 piece crown appears to be one large molding. To further set the tone, ceiling boxes were created on the ceiling in the adjoining room using a molding similar to the AB108. These give the illusion of added depth while evoking a sense of comfort.

Panel Molding:

Breaking convention, MDF was used to frame the doors and windows while a molding like the AD318 was used to trim the boxes on the lower wall. A beadboard was used inside the boxes which adds texture and contrast. The close proximity of the boxes and the floor satisfy the aesthetic need for a baseboard, so a quarter round shoe molding was all that was needed to complete this look.

Columns:

The full columns add elegance to this room and provide an attractive transition point between the entry way and entertaining area.
