Thoughts on Room Design:

The tabula rasa or "blank slate" can either be a burden or, it can be an opportunity for you to create your room's own unique identity. Blending the restrained classical elements of the Georgian era with the formality of the Federal era of the nineteenth century, this dining room may look simple; but, it is the distinct Victorian tripartite wall in combination with both of these styles that set this room apart from others.

The Tripartite Wall:

In the mid to late 1800's, it was common to completely cover the walls with a patterned decorative wall paper or paint. The tripartite wall evolved from this concept. Dividing the wall into 3 distinct sections - the pedestal, a column and an entablature - recalls the proportions of classical columns and is an excellent way to create a "geometric illusion" of space. For instance, as here, the use of strong vertical lines on the fore-wall manipulates the eye into the perception of height and grandeur. Strong horizontal lines give the illusion of breadth and spaciousness. In this wall style, attention to proportion is paramount.

Baseboards:

Vladimir Lenin is attributed as saying, "A chain is only as strong as its weakest link." To take a little license with this quote one might say, "Your tripartite wall is only as strong as its baseboard...," You do not want your wall to appear weak or out of proportion. You want it to have a good strong foundation so we will start with a good-sized hearty baseboard like our 6" ET-8906 Baseboard.

Wall Frames:

In the tripartite wall, wall frames create drama to the lower part of the wall and serve, in essence, as the "pedestal" to our column. Wall frames are based on the Ancient Greek principle known as the Golden Rectangle which states that the ideal dimensions for a rectangle exist in a ratio of 3:2. That is, for every 3 inches of one side of your frame, the adjacent side will be 2 inches. Wall frames 36 inches or less in height are generally designed in a horizontal orientation meaning the longer side will run horizontally and the shorter side vertically. Use our ET-8724 molding to create your own wall frames as seen here. Add depth and density to your wall frames by mounting them first on 1/2" MDF and mounting the top edge at 32" - 36".

Crown Molding:

Cavetto From the Italian cavare meaning "to hollow", cavetto or "cove" molding such as our ET-85615 is a great choice as a cornice piece in this formal dining room. At 4.5" high, it is perfect for your 8' - 10' ceilings.
